Compitas
2026

Compitas is a solo show by Samuel Julian Grace centred around the Salvadoran Guerillas and the communities that existed during the Salvadoran Civil war. Samuel’s grandparents were both members of the FMLN (the leftist Guerillas) and his grandfather fought for over a decade. The research for this show took place mostly at El Muse De La Palabra y la Imagin (San Salvador) and their various online archives.

The show featured two new works;

Large scale cutouts of Guerillas dancing at new years eve parties, graduations and various parties printed on many sheets using poster razor method.

A two channel video displaying the lyrics of Revolutionary music from Los Torrogoces de Morazan interjected with footage of Guerillas during the civil war. One section contains footage of Palestinian and Irish dancers during the time of the revolution in El Salvador, combining the artist’s cultural background.

As part of this show two radio interviews were conducted with Malene Saalsman on Trafo Radio (Kassel) to give a wider context and give time to talk about the artist’s family’s involvment during the civil war. The interviews took place one two weeks before opening and one on the final day.
